VIN model year codes chart (position 10)

Updated 2026-10-05 · By the VINready team, built by a Canadian trailer manufacturer

The 10th character of a VIN is the model year. It comes from a 30-year cycle of letters and digits, so each code stands for two years, 30 years apart. The letters I, O, Q, U and Z and the digit 0 are never used in this position.

Choosing the model year for a trailer

  • The model year is the manufacturer’s designation for that model, not necessarily the calendar year it’s built in. Many trailer builders switch to the next model year in the late summer or fall.
  • Pick one rule and stick to it, so trailers built on the same day for the same model have the same model year.
  • The month and year actually built go on the compliance label separately, as the date of manufacture.
  • Serial numbers usually restart for each model year, which is why the model year matters when you count up.

VINready suggests the model year for you and keeps a separate serial count for each one. To read the year from an existing VIN, use the trailer VIN checker.

Common questions

What letter is 2027 in a VIN?
The 10th character for model year 2027 is V. For 2026 it’s T, and for 2028 it’s W.
Why does a VIN model year code repeat?
There are only 30 usable characters, so the cycle repeats every 30 years: A was 1980 and 2010, and will be 2040. The vehicle’s age tells you which year is meant.
Can a trailer’s model year be different from the year it was built?
Yes. The model year is the manufacturer’s designation, and many builders start the next model year partway through the calendar year. The compliance label still shows the actual month and year of manufacture.
